Running a Fiddler trace

Fiddler Classic is a free third-party web debugging tool. Igloo Support may ask you to run a trace using this tool to better identify what may be causing unexpected behavior in your digital workplace. To create a trace, you will need to perform the action that is leading to your issue while Fiddler Classic is running and recording.

Requirements for running a Fiddler Classic trace

  • Fiddler Classic has been installed on your computer. For more information, see Install Fiddler.
  • You have the appropriate level of access to replicate the issue that Igloo Support is looking to collect a network trace of.

Run a Fiddler Classic trace

Do not log in to any applications while running a Fiddler Classic trace. As part of the trace process, HTTPS traffic will be decrypted and saved in the trace file as plain text. Logging into an application may result in your credentials being recorded in the trace file.

  1. Exit and close all applications except for the ones that you are testing.
    • If you are collecting a trace for behavior in your digital workplace, close all browser tabs other than the one containing your digital workplace.
    • This will help reduce the amount of noise that is captured by the network trace.
  2. Launch Fiddler Classic.
  3. Configure Fiddler Classic to decrypt HTTPS Traffic.
    1. Select Tools, then Options, and finally HTTPS.
    2. Select Decrypt HTTPS traffic. Decryption will be turned off after the trace is collected in Step 10.
    3. When prompted, select Yes to any dialogs to install Fiddler Classic's root certificate.
  4. Restart Fiddler Classic for HTTPS decryption to take effect and select Capturing in the bottom left-hand corner to pause Fiddler Classic.
  5. Prepare the situation that you want to capture a trace of.
  6. Select Capturing in the bottom left-hand corner to unpause Fiddler Classic.
  7. Perform the action that you want a trace of.
  8. Select Capturing in the bottom left-hand corner to pause Fiddler Classic.
  9. Select File, then Save, and finally All Sessions to save the file.
  10. Remove Fiddler Classic's ability to decrypt HTTPS Traffic.
    1. Select Tools, then Options, and finally HTTPS.
    2. Deselect Decrypt HTTPS traffic to turn if off.

After running the Fiddler Classic trace you will have a copy of the network traffic that occurred. Send a copy of the network trace file, saved from step 9, to Igloo Support.
