Running a Fiddler trace

Fiddler is a free third-party web debugging tool. Igloo Support may ask you to run a trace using this tool to better identify what may be causing unexpected behavior in your digital workplace. To create a trace, you will need to perform the action that is leading to your issue while Fiddler is running and recording.

Requirements for running Fiddler trace

  • Fiddler has been installed on your computer. For more information, see Install Fiddler.
  • You have the appropriate level of Access to replicate the issue that Igloo Support is looking to collect a network trace of.

How to run a Fiddler trace

Do not log in to any applications while running a Fiddler trace. As part of the trace process, HTTPS traffic will be decrypted and saved in the trace file as plain text. Logging into an application may result in your credentials being recorded in the trace file.

  1. Exit and close all applications except for the ones that you are testing.
    • If you are collecting a trace for behavior in your digital workplace, close all browser tabs other than the one containing your digital workplace.
    • This will help reduce the amount of noise that is captured by the network trace.
  2. Launch Fiddler.
  3. Configure Fiddler to decrypt HTTPS Traffic.
    • Tools > Options > HTTPS.
    • Decryption will be turned off after the trace is collected (step 10).
      The Decrypt HTTPS traffic option.
  4. Restart Fiddler, and pause its capturing of network traffic.
    • Fiddler needs to be restarted for HTTPS decryption to take effect.
    • Pause Fiddler capturing by selecting the Capturing button on the bottom left-hand corner of Fiddler.
  5. Prepare the situation that you want to capture a trace of.
  6. Re-enable Fiddler's capturing of network traffic.
    • Select the Capturing button on the bottom left-hand corner of Fiddler.
  7. Perform the action that you want a trace of.
  8. Pause Fiddler's capturing of network traffic.
    • Select the Capturing button on the bottom left-hand corner of Fiddler.
  9. Save the network trace.
    • File > Save > All Sessions
  10. Remove Fiddler's ability to decrypt HTTPS Traffic.
    • Tools > Options > HTTPS.

Result of running a Fiddler trace.

After running the Fiddler trace you will have a copy of the network traffic that occurred. Send a copy of the network trace file, saved from step 9, to Igloo Support.
