Team Rooms vs Group Spaces

See Group spaces

Some templates have Team Rooms Built into the template.  With the introduction of Group Spaces there have been some questions about the differences between Team Rooms and Group Spaces.

Team Rooms and Group Spaces are similar many ways.  Both are intended to provide a dedicated space for groups, teams or departments to see information aimed at their group and collaborate together.

The Team Room is just a page with widgets, that provides a specific, team-centric view into the information in the community.  Each of the widgets has been configured to show information from certain blog channels, folders, etc, that pertains to this team.  Additionally the Team Room page can be permissioned so that only certain members have access to see this information.

This is a quick and easy way to set up areas for each team/group.  It is scalable and inexpensive.  However, Team Rooms really only provide a "view-only" environment.  As soon as you'd like to interact with the content there (ie: post a new blog, read a document, comment in a forum) you are taken out of context and sent to the community applications.  It can be a bit disorienting and sometimes difficult for members to find their way back to the Team Room page.

A Group Space is a fully-functioning "sub-community-like" area.  A Group Space has it's own navigation, and applications (such as blogs, wiki, etc) associated with it.  All the information inside of the Group Space can be permissioned so that only certain members have access to read or edit the information in the Group Space.  Group Spaces help to keep members within the context of their space so it's easy for members to post a new blog, read a document or comment in a forum, without leaving the area they are working in.  Like Team Rooms, Group Spaces are quick to set up and can be positioned via the Site Manager.  Group Spaces, beyond any provided in the package you have with IGLOO, have a small cost associated with them, but do offer more flexibility and fidelity.  A video introduction to Group Spaces can be found here.
