Subscriptions & Following

Subscriptions allow you to keep updated on your favourite blog, gallery, forum discussion topic, forum or folder. Subscribing to a community object (blog, gallery, news page, etc.) is a great way to stay informed on the activity within a community. You can choose to be updated instantly, daily, weekly or monthly and can change these settings anytime from your account. To view and edit your subscriptions go to your profile page and go to the subscriptions tab.

To subscribe to an item click on the Follow button, located at the bottom left of a page or next to the article or post you are readying and select how often you wish to be updated.

You can set the frequency of your updates to be:

  • Instant = as soon as item is updated
  • Daily = all Daily notification (even if set at different times or different days) are sent out at 7 AM for each community you belong to
  • Weekly = all weekly notification are sent out at 7 AM and are dependent on the day of the week you set the notification. Example I set two on Monday and one on Tuesday. Therefore on Monday morning I would get the first weekly notification with the two items, on Tuesday I would get the second weekly notification
  • Monthly = works the same as weekly

Auto-Subscribe

The auto-subscribe feature provides contextual subscriptions such as the ability to subscribe to an item when a user is commenting on it. For example or forum topic; or the ability to subscribe to an blog article when the article is created

When creating a blog article there is aFollow button beside the Add Article button. When commenting the Followcheck box is beside the Post button. After subscribing the Subscribe box is checked and the follow icon in the trailer is changed to the active state. Un-clicking the check box in a follow up comment un-subscribes the user.

Administrators and Subscriptions

Administrators can assign certain subscriptions to groups. If you go to a blog channel or forum channel and select subscriptions from the action button in the corner of the page you can select if you want a specific group to receive Instant, Daily, Weekly or Monthly subscriptions. Users can opt out of any subscriptions that the administrator signs them up for in their subscriptions area of their profile.

What are the default settings for this? I received a complaint from a user saying he was being flooded with notifications and had to go in and unclick each individual subscription (content item) he commented on which was around 10 things.

By default you subscribe to items you comment on or post. This can be changed under subscriptions in your profile. If the user would like to stop all communications from the Igloo community to their email address, they must click the disable notifications link at the bottom of their messages folder in their profile.

May I suggest you update this article.  The Subscribe button appers to have been renamed the Follow button.

That was quick! Thanks.

I know that now there is a way to force a subscription to a group for all NEW Forum posts, but is there a way to force a subscription to all replies to forum posts as well?  Educating community users to click the Follow button is a major headache and would make things much easier if we had the option to force a subscription to forum replies as well.

There is but you would have to do it on a post by post basis. Under each post's action buttons you would have to select subcriptions and then whom you would like to have follow them.

OK, thanks for that clarification, Bryan.  It helps to at least know I can subscribe groups to the post after it is made.
