Types of Communities
Private Communities
Privately accessed communities that offer individuals and organizations the ability to collaborate directly on the web. You must be a community member to gain access to the Private Community. Each member must have a user name and password to access community content, membership lists, and online discussions and debates.
Private Communities are generally created around a specific research initiative/project or the particular needs of a research organization or institution. Each Private Community is created and managed by a sponsoring organization such as an NGO, academic institution, project team leader, or single individual.
Private Communities serve as a centralized and secure meeting place on the web where community members may connect with peers, connect to information and ideas, and contribute to a project's development and outcomes.
Public Communities
Publicly accessible communities that offer researchers tools and resources to help accelerate and add value to their work. These resources are available at no charge and do not require a login or password for visitors to gain access.
Public Communities are excellent for gathering research support materials, disseminating research findings and promoting dialogue on governance issues between organizations, academics and the interested public.
