FlashPaper

FlashPaper is the viewer in which you view documents. Working similarly to Adobe Reader, FlashPaper allows you to view a document without having to download it. You can search for specific words, zoom in and out of the document, or print form the page.

Except for PDF files that preview only in portrait orientation, FlashPaper displays a document the way it would be printed. For example: if the program in which you created your document saves it to be printed sideways your document will appear sideways in FlashPaper. To make sure your document is appearing the way it should, click on "print preview" in your editing program.

FlashPaper currently renders:

  • Word
  • PDF
  • PowerPoint
  • Plain text
  • Excel (Only one work sheet)
  • Text
  • CSV

Here are some reasons why a document may not render

  • Opening a document causes a pop-up to show up (pop-ups like macros)
  • Document being password protected
  • Document being corrupt
  • Document type not supported (see list above)
  • Layered documents (Layered pdf files, etc)

Beyond the common reason listed above, there are many unknown variables out of our control that may prevent the document preview from rendering. However it helps to remember that FlashPaper basically sends the document to 'print' in order to generate its preview so if document would have trouble printing an element, then our system will not be able to render a preview for it either.

Connection with IGLOO Desktop Tool

Users of the IGLOO Desktop tool can open the document on your local machine using the default program to edit that type of file. When you save the file the new version will be added to the community.

Tips and Tricks

Click on the image of the person who loaded the document to see other items they have recently posted.

When uploading word documents, they may default in portrait, however if you wish to view the document in landscape, change the print settings to landscape, and they should appear in FlashPlayer the same; that is to say that the settings of the document in FlashPaper resemble the way the document would be printed.

Checking the print preview of a document will also show you documents that may not render completely. For example a document may look like it would be 10 pages, but when print previewing only 4 pages display. In this case, FlashPaper would only render the first 4 pages.

The preview generated by FlashPaper is cached so that your browse doesn't have to download it every time you want to view the item. This means when you add new version to a document you may have to clear your cache in order for the new preview to display.

The preview rendering time is directly related to the size and complexity of the document being FlashPapered and to the number of documents waiting in the queue. Generally, items being uploaded will be processed within minutes but may take up to 1 hour.

I like Flash Paper for most documents that we post, however, with a recent newsletter in pdf that I posted, I just realized that the hyperlinks that are embedded in the document are not active. Is that just the way it is, or is there a way to make the pdf displayed in Flash Paper retain the links? Alternatively, is there another way to upload a pdf so that the links are retained? (that doesn't force the user to download)

Hi Scot,

The only way to retain the links in a pdf is to download the document. I have submitted a feature request on your behalf. We are looking into other options.

Thanks

Is there a way to disable Flash Paper entirely so a click on a document icon simply downloads this document rather than taking you to the Flash Paper page? We are having big problems with Flash Paper for our documents - they quite simply render horribly in it.

Yes our development team can turn flash paper off for your community is special cases. You will not be able to bypass the page completly but no preview will be displayed.

We now have a solution but it only works with PDF's.

Having trouble with a document uploaded by a member not rednering after 24 hours. A simple word document that downloads and opens just fine. I get the message:

"The preview for this item will be processed shortly. Please check back at a later time."

That is a bug that will be fixed in the patch Monday,

In the mean while if you upload a new version using the versions panel it should cause the preview to render
