Hello James,
Thank you for your question, this behaviour will be corrected in a upcoming update. Apologies for this behaviour, and we thank you for your patience while it is resolved.

When a user sends another user a message an email alert is fired with the subject and body of the message. If the recipient replies to the message inside the community then the same original email is sent back to the originator which is a little confusing. I would expect the email alert back to the original sender to say some like "Response to Message:xxx" and in the body have the reply and possibly the original message for reference.
I'm posting this as a question because I'm not sure if this is something that is configurable.

Thanks for the quick response Jesse. I'm new to Igloo so sorry for the basic questions but how frequently do updates take place and is there any visibility into what's going to be included?
The upcoming release is a point release to resolve some outstanding items. All major releases will be documented on this site. You can follow this blog to receive updates on when releases will happen and what is included in major releases. The frequency of our releases are about every 45 - 60 days.
Thank you for your question.
