Like this support wiki says, flash paper can be disabled on a per community basis via Professional Serviced department. This, however, will not help you bypass the document details page.
It's an interesting use case (how I understand it: a box.net-like behaviour that is currently the base behaviour of My Briefcase section of one's profile). It may lead to a sacrifice of comments and labels but could streamline the user flow in certain cases. We'll consider it.

Hi Ulrik,
I don't know of a way to disable it. I imagine you might be able to use CSS to hide it, but that might cause other issues and be a bigger headache.
I would be interested to know what kind of problems are you having with it?
I have seen some issues with Search, but most of the time it had to do with the metadata of the document itself.
Ulrik, I'm assuming you're referring to the list view of documents within a folder. There is no way to prevent the system from going into the Document Details page where the preview, comments, labels and other relevant data can be found.
However, what you may find helpful is that if the folder is configured to show File Size and is viewed in "Details View" mode (as opposed to "Thumbnail View"), clicking on the file size value will download the document.
I am looking to disable it completely. Simply because Flash Paper is a terrible viewer for any document. I have spoken to Igloo and they say an HTML5 version is on its way.
