Being able to see (and select from) all available labels

Hi IGLOO!

Love the latest release - except that I am finding it odd that we can no longer access a complete list of our labels. It is great that you added the filtering, but I think what would be more useful is to allow users to select one, or many labels, from a list of available labels (e.g. through a check box system). The way its set up now, users don't know which labels are available, and it isn't intuitive to use the search function to find labels.).

Thanks!

Katherine

Hi Katherine,

I agree with you...  In our community, the label browser was even more important than the search system.  Our members come to the site looking for information in a specific category (eg. Mining).  The label browser was useful for that because you could just select the "Mining" label (from the list of available labels) and then you see all of the content that was tagged with that label.  The problem with searching for "Mining" is that we have hundreds of documents that contain that word but actually have nothing to do with mining (eg. a document about agriculture that has the word "mining" somewhere in it).

It gets more complicated when I am looking for something even more specific - like policy documents in Ontario.  If I do a search in our community right now for "Policy ON", I get 272 results.  I could scroll to the bottom, find the policy label, click on it, let the page reload, scroll back to the bottom, find the ON label, let the page reload... and then see that our community has 3 documents tagged with Policy and Ontario, but I'm afraid that our members are not going to take those extra steps, or understand how the whole label/search system works (because normally search is for specific terms but our members are looking for specific "labels", if that makes sense).  It would be so much faster and simpler if they could just use the label browser (screen that we used to have), where the labels were organized into categories (like "type of information", "sector", "province"), and then check the boxes for Policy and Ontario (selecting as many labels as they want).

Hey guys - a few thoughts on this topic:

1. If you simply hit the Enter key in the search field (with no text), you will get the "Sorry, your search is too broad" message, but then you can select any of your Labels below that to return all content items tagged with that label.

2. Once you do this, you can see that the URL changes to "/?seach&label=<Label_Number>".  You could use this as a hyperlink URL on your Home or any page in an HTML widget to help community members open up a more immediate search based on these Lables.

3. I do agree with Renee that the placement of the Labels at the bottom of the search results are not intuitive to users.  IMO, "Labels" should be added to Filter by type: and then (upon selection) expand to show all Labels with a checkbox for each.  I'll submit an enhancement for this one.

I can't really provide a screenshot because our community is private, but basically this is what our label cloud looks like:

Hi Paul - thanks for your comment. I think its still too much to assume that people would use the search field as a way to access the system of labels. But we'll definitely be submitting a feature request as well!)

Cheers,
Katherine

I agree. Using labels was the best alternative for people who prefer to navigate in familiar folder structures instead of searching! Please bring it back.

Administrators can create tags which members can apply to relate and organize their information across the community. This kind of meta data describes an item and allows it to be found more easily by browsing and searching. Labels help users to find information more effectively and add relational value to content within the context of your community.
